What Are We Doing?

What are we doing in the final days leading up to our next Mission Corps assignment?  Three weeks from today, we will be in Zurich headed toward Buesingen, Germany.  There are honest things to tend to, one of which is to carve to perfection our travel list on Excel   Even though we have traveled a great deal, there are still items that we add and that we delete.  The travel list is neatly divided into categories that include toiletries, first aid, clothing, household items, paper work, and electronics.  Surprisingly, paper work requires quite a bit of consideration from stopping the paper, to  renting a p.o. box to collect our mail, to xeroxing every piece of documentation that we take with us. We are making a list of addresses, registering with the State Department, procuring traveler's and medical insurance and finding a bank to buy currency for the first country of our arrival.  Paper work is what it is, and its demands have changed for us through the years.   The funniest category is our electronics one, which is leaning a little more toward the digital world. In the past, the digital camera was the only item in that category!  Now, there's a longer list. Besides the camera(s), there are newer gadgets that actually make traveling, communicating, and blogging so much easier.  A little world of "Apple gadgets" will tag along with us, documenting experiences on the page and with photos.  We are packing.  Our guest bedroom is a collection station of unorganized necessities waiting to be organized.  We will get there.

Establishing categories on Excel is one thing, but seeing them in small drugstore boxes or xeroxed copies or rolled into tight balls of clothing is quite another thing.  In the middle of our conversation, we find that we are spinning toward the computer to add another item to our list before we forget it. Then, we can't remember our suspended conversation, but that doesn't matter because we documented that item or that task.   That is what we are doing right now.

In addition to making those lists and seeing them come to life, we are beginning to "eat down."  We are buying in smaller quantities, and eating all of it before going back to the market. (This could be practice for living overseas.)  Our freezer is getting leaner - showcasing only the good part of life!
Our pantry is becoming skinnier, too.  We are eating down, planning meals that will use that little bit of rice or last small can of soup.  There are fewer things to worry about because there are more important things to focus on.

We are praying for clarity as we serve in this, our newest assignment to Buesingen, Germany.   We are praying about relationships, responsibilities, and growing. We can't put those in categories - or, at least, we don't dare minimize those to a list or a category.

Slowly, the broad months of ago when we received this assignment are becoming more narrow weeks that will funnel into days.  We are moving forward, and we invite you to come along with us as you did when we "truly experienced God and His surprises" in Ecuador.  And, God will be the same in Germany!

Keep looking up!

Germany? Or is it Switzerland?

The village of Buesingen sits on the Rhine River..."And to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at evening" (I Chronicles 23:30)
Most of you have been following our blog for more than a year now.  You were with us when we launched it and you were with us when we shared with you our heart's desire to serve as Mission Corps volunteers with the International Church of the Nazarene.  We retired while in St. Louis.  We sold our big house and almost everything in it.  We downsized, relocated, and set out to do what we felt God had asked us to do...go.  And, that we did!  Last year, we spent 3 months teaching English and working in the churches in the Andes Mountain range in beautiful Ecuador. We learned, struggled, learned some more and grew.  We experienced new everyday - new culture, traditions, language, and faith.  Ahhhh, now, faith.  That is why we call this blog our Steppingstone Journey.  We know the next stepping stone is there because God told us it would be, but sometimes it's not directly in front of us.  It can be located off to the side or a little further out than a normal stride, but it is always there.  We only have to take that step of faith.
We been home for 10 months and it's time to take our next step.  We have our next assignment, and we leave in May for 3 months to serve in Buesingen, Germany at the European Nazarene Bible College and Conference Center.    We are beyond humbled about this assignment and the opportunity to live in a different culture and to personally meet individuals who are either grounded in Christ or are seeking Christ, all of whom will have a profound influence on us while we serve there.
The village of Buesingen has an interesting story, which we have included below.  Also, we have included a short video tour of the college grounds.
Please bundle us in your prayers as we plan for our assignment in Germany.  We are preparing for English classes as well as opportunities for Bible Conversation groups.  We know that our assignment will be very diversified here, so pray for daily renewed energy, strong health, and a clear vision of purpose. This is going to be one more exciting adventure, and we give credit to the "Giver of good gifts!"

Büsingen am Hochrhein, commonly known as Büsingen, is a German town (7.62 km2 or 2.94 sq mi) entirely surrounded by the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen and, south across the Rhine, by the Swiss cantons of Zürich and Thurgau. It has a population of about 1,450 inhabitants. Since the early 19th century, the town has been separated from the rest of Germany by a narrow strip of land (at its narrowest, about 700 m wide) containing the Swiss village of Dörflingen.
Administratively, Büsingen is part of Germany, forming part of the district of Konstanz, in the Bundesland of Baden-Württemberg, but economically, it forms part of the Swiss customs area, as do the independent principality of Liechtenstein and the Italian town of Campione d'Italia. There are no border controls between Switzerland and Büsingen or the rest of Germany since Switzerland joined the Schengen zone in 2008/09.
Büsingen is highly regarded as a holiday destination in summer by both German and Swiss visitors from around the area for its recreational areas along the Rhine. The town is also the home of the European Nazarene College, a relatively large and internationally-orientated Bible college.

Keep Looking Up!
